Foundation Reaches $3.0 Million on 20th Anniversary

Yellowknife - January 18, 2012 - The Yellowknife Community Foundation marked a number of significant milestones in the organization’s efforts to support community development projects in Yellowknife and the NWT in 2011. (Read more in "Twenty years of community building" - NNSL January 18)

President Darrell Vikse said “2011 was a great year. Not only did we reach our 20th anniversary, we achieved three significant goals:

1. The Foundation’s permanent funds passed the $3.0 million mark,
2. Total grants and scholarships to date have surpassed the $500,000 level
3. Over 20 scholarship and grant funds covering the arts, health, trades and training, sport, environment, emergency services, aviation, post secondary studies, heritage and community development have been established.

“We have come a long way since the original steering committee was struck in the fall of 1991 to discuss the feasibility of a Community Foundation for Yellowknife. The long term commitment of our volunteers, donor families and a very dedicated businesses community have resulted in the achievements we are announcing today”.

The Yellowknife Community Foundation will be highlighting these milestones and the funds we manage at their upcoming Valentine’s Gala on Saturday, February 11 at the Explorer Hotel. Ticket information is available on the Foundation’s website.

The Yellowknife Community Foundation was incorporated in 1993 to provide residents (and former residents) with a means of supporting projects in our community for the enduring future. The Foundation is not singularly dedicated to any specific area of support. It embodies a simple concept - that people working together can make a difference. The money, invested over time, will grow and will continue to have an impact long after the original gift is made. Donations to the Foundation are eligible deductions for Income Tax purposes.
