2010 Call for Scholarship and Grant Applications


April 3 , 2010 - The Yellowknife Community Foundation is looking to give away $100,000 in grants and scholarships in 2010. The next deadline for scholarship applications and funding through the Foundation's named funds or the Yellowknife Community Fund is May 15th.

Since its inception in 1993, the Community Foundation has been providing grants and scholarships to groups and individuals improve the quality of life in Yellowknife by:

  • advancing the welfare of the needy and alleviating human suffering and poverty;
  • assisting and promoting arts and cultural activities;
  • promoting education;
  • assisting sport, recreation and community development;
  • assisting and advancing the provision of medical services; and
  • assisting and advancing other community activities or facilities of a charitable nature.

The Yellowknife Community Foundation provides scholarship and grant funding in the following areas:

The Yellowknife Community Foundation also supports the following funds:

  • The Loraine Minish-Cooper Memorial Fund was established to build and support the operation of the Garden of Hope (near Yellowknife City Hall) designed to provide a place of peace and comfort, especially for those with breast cancer and their families.
  • The Walter Gibbins Memorial Fund was established for the maintenance of the Walter Gibbins mineral collection and the display cases used to house the collection, as well as for geological education in the NWT. The mineral collection is maintained by the NWT Mining Heritage Society and has been displayed in a number of locations in the City of Yellowknife.
  • The NWT Mining Heritage Centre Fund was established to support the on-going operation and maintenance of the Centre as well as improvements to the Centre and its displays.
  • The Pat McMahon Memorial Fund was established in 2008 to recognize female individuals that demonstrate community leadership in Yellowknife municipal affairs and civic pride. Grants may also be awarded to a female individual involved in demonstrating uniqueness in promoting Yellowknife or a female individual wishing to pursue studies in Tourism, Public Administration and/or Political Science. Grants are not yet awarded from this fund.
