Her family and (continued below)

friends have established the fund to recognize female individuals that demonstrate community leadership in Yellowknife municipal affairs and civic pride. Although priority in the awarding of grants will be given to female individuals involved in these activities, grants may also be awarded to a female individual involved in demonstrating uniqueness in promoting Yellowknife or a female individual wishing to pursue studies in Tourism, Public Administration and/or Political Science.

Pat McMahon grew up in Canada's North and had lived in Yellowknife since 1968. She served as an alderman for seven years before being elected mayor of the Northwest Territories capital from 1987 to 1994.

The Yellowknife Community Foundation is a registered charity. It was formed in 1993 to provide residents (and former residents) with a means of supporting projects in our community for the enduring future. The Foundation is not singularly dedicated to any specific area of support. It embodies a simple concept - that people working together can make a difference. Donations are placed in a permanent capital fund. The money, invested over time, will grow and will continue to have an impact long after the original gift is made. Donations to the Foundation are eligible deductions for Income Tax purposes.
